Ritchie Lo – Composer

Ritchie is a musical chameleon with three decades’ experience – a walking encyclopaedia of jazz, pop and Latin.

A noted Chinese lyricist, he’s penned pop tunes and worked with artists such as Andy Lau and Maria Cordero.

He’s written plenty of lines for TV commercials and amassed hundreds of writing credits in broadcast and documentary productions.  Along the way, he founded Uptown Music.

Ritchie’s a man for all seasons but has a knack for creating:

  • pop songs with memorable melodies;
  • band sounds with big bass, guitar, drums;
  • music with a cheeky, humorous touch;
  • children’s tracks;
  • scores that spell suspense; and
  • contemporary oriental fusion music.

Uptown Music principals Ritchie Lo and Mabel Ki have worked with the biggest brands – think Coca-Cola, Unilever and Audi – in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan.

Mabel Ki – Composer, Executive Producer

Mabel gets to grips with a client’s vision, fleshing out the fine detail in broad concepts. She can hear your musical vision and speaks your language.

Translating emotion into music is a skill Mabel picked up while working in advertising and marketing agencies in the late 1980s and 1990s.

While she enjoys working in broadcast television, it’s her second love after classical music. A classically trained pianist, Mabel has composed everything from the classic to the contemporary since the early 1990s.

Mabel works on scores that have:

  • sentimental and emotional themes;
  • grand orchestral tones;
  • classical undertones, including the piano and strings;
  • rocky, grunge elements;
  • sparse, cool notes that lend themselves to chill-out tracks and conceptual sound design; and
  • an oriental flavour but are firmly fusion.

Decades of experience come together in
Uptown Music’s dynamic duo – principals
that give the studio its soul.
